Black pepper is one of the very oldest and highly revered spices, used in India for over 4,000 years, mainly for urinary and liver disorders. The root word comes from the Sanskrit word 'pippali', changed to the Latin 'piper'. The Romans paid their taxes with this spice rather than coins. It was used extensively in Greece to combat fevers.

In Medieval England black pepper was used in charms and amulets for protection, most likely because it was used as an antidote to poisons and to stop the spread of infections.

Black pepper essential oil is obtained from dried peppercorns and is a lovely warm stimulating oil wonderful for massage oils.

It is known for treating poor circulation, sluggish digestion and constipation or can be used neat in a warm bath to ease aching limbs, coughs and colds and muscle cramps.

Celery essential oil comes from the same family as carrot, parsley and fennel etc. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the seeds and is used primarily for flavouring of foods and trace amounts are also used in fine perfumes.

Celery essential oil is also a traditional remedy for a nervous stomach. Prior to the Middle Ages, a wild form of celery referred to as selinon, or smallage, was used as a diuretic and a carminative which is a treatment to reduce intestinal gas.

A study has shown that celery is also mildly tranquillizing and may be helpful in relieving arthritic pain, whilst other research suggests that celery seed contains other compounds that stop the carcinogenic effect of environmental toxins in the liver.

Can be used directly in the bath (4 - 6 drops) or in an oil burner. Therapeutic properties: anti rheumatic, antiseptic (urinary), antispasmodic, aperitif, depurative, digestive diuretic, sedative (nervous), stimulant (uterine), stomachic, tonic (digestive).

Aroma: a long-lasting, spicy, warm aroma. Note: it is advisable to keep out of the sun if this oil is used on the skin. Do not use when pregnant. © Please do not copy text. Avena product description – Celery Seed Essential Oil (Apium graveolens).

Our infused Comfrey oil is one of nature's greatest medicinal herbs and has been used since about 400 B.C. Throughout the ages comfrey has acquired an unrivalled reputation as a wonderful healing herb. Greeks and Romans used comfrey to stop heavy bleeding, treat bronchial problems, and heal wounds and broken bones. The name comfrey derives from the Latin 'conferre', meaning bring together or grow together. In Medieval times, comfrey's reputation for knitting broken bones flourished and it was commonly referred to as knitbone and often called the heal-all herb. Our infused comfrey oil takes advantage of these wonderful properties, proven over the centuries. We believe that our comfrey oil is an amazing all round healer that may help aid rapid healing for a vast array of skin injuries, broken bones and bone fractures. Comfrey's most important ingredient is the substance allantoin. Allantoin is believed to be a cell proliferator, able to strengthen skin tissue, promoting the growth and multiplication of cells and thus speeding healing. This product is said to act as a wonderful bonesetter, creating a protective casing around joints, potentially assisting healing, encouraging new skin growth and rapidly improving fractures (e.g. fingers, toes, hands, ribs). To use, apply directly to the affected area by massaging into the skin. For more serious conditions users may find it beneficial to soak a bandage or poultice in comfrey oil and to strap it the injured area. Do not use comfrey for deep cuts or lacerations. All dressings should be changed at least once per day. Comfrey oil can also be added to a wide range of aromatherapy products and makes a wonderful ointment.

Pure jojoba oil can be used directly on the skin to assist in fighting wrinkles and to moisturise extra dry or old skin as well as skin plagued with many other ailments or problems. It assists in minimising lines and wrinkles and can actually help to rejuvenate the skin and encourage new cell growth without clogging the skin with greasy oil. Jojoba oil will not block pores or hair follicles which remain open so they can function freely and not cause blackheads or promote acne. It is suspected that jojoba oil tricks the skin into stopping the production of sebum by somehow mimicking it. This also means that jojoba oil will assist in breaking down sebum in plugged pores and the sebum can mix well with jojoba oil without sealing off the skin pores. Dermatologists have also reported jojoba oil as being non-irritating for use on acne, spots and blemishes. Jojoba oil is rapidly absorbed by the skin and another remarkable property is that it is non-greasy and leaves no oily after-feel making it a wonderful skin oil or massage base. This is one of the most popular oils we sell due to its all round benefits including fighting wrinkles as well as dry, or oily skin. Jojoba oil assists in fighting lines due to dryness and keeps the skin supple and soft. It is made from a bean and the resultant jojoba oil is golden coloured, odourless, non-allergic and actually a liquid wax which can solidify easily, if that happens just place bottle in a warm place or warm water for a few moments. The chemical content of jojoba oil is very much like that of the sperm whale oil, you could see jojoba oil as the vegetarian substitute for sperm whale oil. Simply place a few drops of pure jojoba oil in you palms, rub hands together and gently massage the oil into your clean skin or use it as carrier oil adding essential oils for fragrance.

Lichen planus is an itchy rash that can appear anywhere on the body but often favours the inside of the wrists and ankles, the lower legs, back, and neck. The mouth, genital region, hair and nails are affected in some individuals. It can last from months to years and most commonly affects those between the ages of 30 and 60. It's rare for children or older people to be troubled though not impossible. Lichen planus appears as shiny, flat-topped bumps that often have an angular shape. These bumps have a reddish-purplish colour with a shiny cast due to a very fine scale. The precise cause of lichen planus is not known and is often mistaken for psoriasis as they can look similar. However, unlike with psoriasis, lichen planus is not believed to run in families and its onset bears no relation to stress. Usage: massage the oil directly into the skin twice daily.

Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the menopause. They usually occur over a period of a few months, but for some women they can go on for a number of years. Hot flushes are caused by a sudden drop in oestrogen. This is why flushes usually stop once the level of oestrogen stabilises. Women can have hot flushes on the neck and face, upper arms, torso or the entire body. Hot flushes may last a few seconds or a few minutes and they can be strong or mild. Increased blood flow to the area raises the skin temperature and this creates a flush, red and blotchy skin. Sweating is the body's way of trying to cool down. Some ways to ease symptoms are to wear natural fabrics that breathe, carry a foldable fan with you to help cool down, not to fight the flush and try to relax if you can, use cotton sheets and wear lightweight cotton or silk to bed or don't wear anything at all, drink less coffee and alcohol and avoid spicy food especially late at night as they can make flushes and sweats worse. Our M.P. (menopause) Massage Oil is a blended ready to apply oil for massaging into the soles of the feet, upper arms and shoulders. It contains essential oils that are reputed to and may also help to control hot flushes the natural way.

St. John's Wort infused oil is a universal carrier oil often used by aromatherapists when preparing massage blends and creams. It is widely used for bruises, sprains and aching muscles due to is anti-inflammatory properties, and is often used by herbalists to help speed the healing of wounds and sores, skin irritations and burns. St. John's Wort is not a new herbal treatment, but one that has been handed down for hundreds of years. Once known to pharmacists as red oil or Hypericum liniment, it was still available in pharmacies in the early 20th century. The practice of soaking the flowers in olive oil, infusing the oil in the sun and then using the oil internally as a diuretic or externally as an application for wounds dates at least to the time of the first edition of Gerarde's Herball from 1597. Such is the success of the oil the German government allows St. John's Wort preparations to be labelled for the treatment (or after treatment) of such conditions as sharp or abrasive wounds, muscular pain as well as first degree burns. Our oil is a wonderful quality and infused using sunflower oil.

Wheat germ oil is very high in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which is a natural antioxidant. With great nourishing qualities, wheat germ oil is ideal for any type of aging skin. It is perfect for adding to massage blends or preparing carrier oils for use in beauty, skincare, and aromatherapy. Wheat germ massage blends assist in promoting circulation and formation of new cells to improve the appearance of skin, and to help repair sun and weather damage. Wheat germ is quite a thick oil and may be that bit too sticky when used on its own so try mixing it with lighter carrier oils such as sweet almond, sunflower or grape seed for a much more smoothly blended and easier to manage base oil. Wheat germ oil is also a useful ingredient in hair care products thanks to its mineral and protein content. The Indian tribes named this small North American tree witch hazel because of its resemblance to the hazel tree and its wonderful healing virtues. Witches ascribed magic powers to it because of its astringent and vastly protective powers. The essential oil of witch hazel is not sold separately as the plant does not produce enough essential oil to make production viable. However, there are various distillates of witch hazel such as ours called hydrosols or witch hazel waters. Witch hazel hydrosol is a strong anti-oxidant and astringent, which makes it very useful in fighting acne. It is often used as a natural remedy for psoriasis, eczema and in aftershave applications. It is traditionally known as a good first reaction against shaving cuts and abrasions for men and women. Other uses for witch hazel include use on ingrown nails, cracked or blistered skin, for treating insect bites and as a treatment for varicose veins, bruises, sprains and sun burn and it is found in numerous haemorrhoid preparations.
