It is rich in essential fatty acids, oleic and linoleic acid, and is known for its ability to penetrate the skin without leaving an oily feel. Apricot kernel also has moisturising and revitalising properties which makes it popular in products for dehydrated, delicate, aging, sensitive or inflamed skin.

Our cold pressed argan oil is known by the Moroccan Berber community as the 'Tree of Life', the argan tree has supported the people of these arid regions and their livestock for centuries. The leaves and fruit sustain goats, camels and sheep. Cattle live off the press-cake that remains after the oil has been extracted, the people eat the oil and the nut shells are used for fuel.

Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the tree which is a laborious process taking about 12-20 hours of hand processing to produce one litre of oil, making it one of the rarest and most expensive oils of its kind in the world. Often used as a culinary oil, argan has twice as much vitamin E as olive oil and is rich in antioxidants, carotenes, squalene and has 80% unsaturated fatty acids, but argan oil has also been documented since the 13th century as a wonderful aromatherapy oil that can be used to nourish and add life to hair, on the nails to strengthen and as a fantastic skin oil. The active substances called triterpenoids that occur in this oil offer amazing skin protection benefits and thus it is considered an effective anti-aging oil due to properties such as the high levels of vitamin E /tocopherols (antioxidants help neutralise free radical damage, which is important for skin exposed to polluted Western environments) and saponins (skin-softening agents).

Besides cooling and soothing inflammation, it is also reputed to help reduce wrinkles by restoring the skin's hydro-lipid layer. Argan oil is suitable for skin prone to psoriasis, eczema, dry patches and acne and can also help ease the irritation of chicken pox. It's said to reduce scarring and prevent stretch marks.

Argan can be used neat on the face and body as a natural beauty oil. Applied to the skin it is a dry oil that's instantly absorbed and leaves a silky feel that helps improve the skin's appearance and texture. The Berber women have used argan oil for centuries to protect and nourish their skin, hair and nails from the harsh conditions in which they live and now argan oil is rapidly gaining popularity as a 'miracle ingredient' in the Western beauty product industry especially for use on the hair. Its uniquely versatile formula helps to smooth split ends and restore the appearance of damaged hair providing a healthy looking radiant sheen.

To use: rub the oil between the palms of the hands and massage into the skin daily or just massage straight into the areas of the body ready to receive extra care. Add a few drops to a bath to soften the skin. Brush through static or dry hair. Massage a drop into the nails to strengthen and protect or use as an ingredient in other massage oils, creams, lotions, shampoos or conditioners.

Our refined avocado oil is extracted from the flesh of the avocado fruit which consists of up to 30% pure oil. Avocado still carries its nickname 'alligator pear' as the avocado tree was first found growing in the South American swamp lands. It was an important food source and was used as a medicine as well as an aphrodisiac for the Aztec civilization.

Recent research in the USA has revealed that avocado oil not only smoothes the surface of the skin but can also penetrate its upper layers absorbing by its vital vitamins, monounsaturated fats and EFAs below the skin to help delay degeneration keeping skin looking youthful. Avocado oil would therefore be an excellent ingredient for face creams, lotions and helping to smooth out mature and dry skin.

It can also be used in after-shave balms and cream. As the oil absorbs very quickly into the skin it would be excellent for dry and damaged skin, in sun care lotions and sun creams; the sterols within the oil have also been shown to be effective as an ingredient for sun-screen lotions and creams and it is considered one of the best oils for blocking harmful UV rays.

Our avocado oil is light in colour and has no odour, meaning it can be applied to the face as an intensive facial beauty oil. Avocado oil is a mild, nourishing, semi-fatty oil which is rich in vitamins and can be used as an additive to other base oils at up to 20% dilution.

Borage oil is also known as starflower oil and is derived from the seeds of the borage plant, a large plant with blue, star-shaped flowers found throughout Europe and North Africa and naturalised to North America.

Our borage oil contains a high amount (30%) of gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which has anti-inflammatory properties. Borage oil is excellent for natural skin-care, especially on dry or mature skin and it has been confirmed that the borage plant encourages the production of adrenaline which helps the body cope with stressful situations or with mental exhaustion and depression. It may also improve mood in menopausal depression.

Our borage oil can be added to other carrier oils at a 10-15% dilution to give blends a boost. It can also be used undiluted as an intensive night treatment for the face or neck, for restoring skin smoothness and flexibility; it may also help to reduce trans-epidermal water loss by restoring skin smoothness and flexibility. It is said to be particularly good for use on people suffering from eczema and psoriasis. Borage can be used in shampoos as an active ingredient for dandruff sufferers and is widely acknowledged for its use on stretch marks.

Castor oil is one of the few carrier oils that can be used as an emulsifying agent. It is soluble and can be used as a base for essential oils. Castor oil also acts as a protective barrier on your skin that will protect against harsh environmental conditions; it has lubricating properties and is ideal for use in nail care products and lipsticks.

It is often used in massage oils, creams, aromatherapy, and in manufacturing, particularly as a conditioning agent in hair care products. The fatty acids of castor oil are ricinoleic (89%), oleic (6%) and linoleic (3%).

Avena are wholesale and retail carrier oil suppliers and have a high turnover of oils ensuring great quality and fresh products. We constantly source oils and trade socially aware ingredients from fastidious parts of the world so you can buy with confidence. © Please do not copy text. Pressed from roasted beans cocoa butter is light yellow in colour and has a wonderful, subtle chocolate aroma. Cocoa butter is a semi solid butter which is quite hard when set but melts on your skin or when warmed. Due to its high fatty acid content (mainly stearic and oleic acids) it is often used in skin care products and has soothing, softening and moisturising properties. It is also used in many quality soap and bath products for its emollient properties. Cocoa butter can be applied directly to the skin and can also be used in hair care although our shea butter is thought more effective for this purpose. Supplied in a 200g jar or larger sizes in bags. Cocoa butter should be stored sealed in a cool dark place. © Please do not copy text. Avena product description – Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao).

Our coconut oil is fractionated coconut oil and is free from impurities. It is liquid at room temperature meaning it's more readily assimilated by the skin and has good keeping qualities.

Coconut oil is excellent for a massage as it is a silky feeling (yet not greasy) oil with a great massage glide and can be delicately fragranced with essential oils as it does not have an aroma of its own.

It helps in the removal of the outer layer of dead skin cells making your skin smoother and softer. Coconut oil is rich in natural antioxidants, particularly vitamin E, which has a protective effect against free radicals that can contribute towards aging, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Coconut oil is used in many aromatherapy treatments such as lotions, creams, lip balms, moisturisers, relief of dry, rough and wrinkled skin, as well as for psoriasis and eczema sufferers. Coconut oil is also well known as a tanning oil and increases the speed of the tanning process producing a deep, lasting tan as well as in many shampoos and conditioners Coconut oil can help restore the protein loss of damaged hair, help in the prevention of falling hair and encourages hair growth.

Evening primrose is a perfect skin care oil, it is nourishing, softening and soothing for dry or irritated skin with a delicate and slightly sweet aroma. It is said to be an excellent oil for face and body massage blends, particularly for dry, scaly, devitalised and prematurely aging skin.

Evening primrose is often used for eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, rosacea and dandruff, it also can accelerate the healing of wounds and scars by forming a protective layer on the epidermis. It keeps the complexion strong and supple, and is consequently a popular ingredient in skin care products.

Evening primrose oil is also said to be effective with other conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, endometriosis, schizophrenia, heart disease, diabetic nerve damage and obesity. If using as a carrier oil use as a 10% dilution in a cheaper oil such as sweet almond.

Evening primrose oil is extracted from the seeds of a large, delicate, yellow wild flower, first brought to Europe from Virginia in the 1600s. It is a tall spiky plant which grows almost anywhere and is even found in altitudes of up to 9,000 feet in areas such as in the Rocky Mountains. It bursts into bloom early in the evening, hence its name. The tiny seeds are the size of mustard seeds and are hand-harvested.

Evening primrose oil is highly unsaturated and rich in fatty acids, especially gamma linolenic acid. G.L.A. is an essential fatty acid the body uses to manufacture hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are involved in healthy functioning of many types of body tissues, combating pain and inflammation, regulating the menstrual cycle and controlling blood/cholesterol levels whilst also appearing to have a beneficial effect on the brain and immune system. © Please do not copy text. Who doesn’t love a good foot rub? Using our foot massage balm with essential oils is the ideal way to give the best and most soothing foot massage. The feet are very often the hardest worked part of the body. They are what hold up our weight all day long and the longer we walk, stand or work, the more tired and achy they will become. By receiving a foot massage we can experience wonderful relaxation as well as pain relief and many other health benefits.

Reflexology is the art of applying pressure to specific points on a person’s feet (or hands) in order to gain a positive mental and/or physical change to the recipient. Both feet have meridians or energy lines and areas called the solar plexus reflex, which are like mini storage areas for stress and anxiety. Massaging the solar plexus reflex releases this stress, which is why a good foot massage can alleviate anxiety and bring about a deep state of relaxation even if you don’t have tired or aching feet. Foot reflexology is based on the theory that these nerve zones or reflex points run from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all vital organs on the way. This is why some of the many other benefits reflexologists advertise are such as it can help cure or prevent colds and minor ailments, increase energy, help prevent foot or ankle injuries, relieve pain from MS and chemotherapy, stimulate the activity of internal organs and treat liver dysfunction, constipation, headaches and migraines to name but a few.

Foot massage can also increase circulation and lower blood pressure bringing a sense of balance and harmony to the most stressful of days. Regular foot massage could have so many healing qualities simply because the necessary zones may be rubbed and manipulated during massage (even if it is unintentionally by an amateur). Studies have been carried out on heart patients that show a significant decrease in stress after a foot massage which not only means that a foot massage causes relaxation but is better for overall health. As heart disease is so commonly linked to stress and anxiety anything that alleviates these has to be beneficial. Like most Oriental medical techniques foot massage or reflexology concentrates on treating the whole person rather than just the symptoms of one particular ailment. As well as all this, foot massage is also known to be sensual and romantic when the mood is correctly set. It is said that foot massages date back to ancient Egypt before moving to China and then Europe, meaning this age-old tradition has been around for thousands of years. These are just some of the many benefits of foot massage but at the end of the day you can always ignore all this and just have one because it feels so good!

Avena Foot Massage Balm is made from a blend of cosmetic grade sweet almond and sunflower oils with pure essential oils of peppermint for soothing, cooling and freshness, tea tree for skin health and its antiseptic properties and clary sage which is renowned for bringing balance and a feeling of well-being.

Directions: to use simply massage a small amount into the feet, a little goes a long way and you will get good value from each jar. Customer feedback tells us that this balm is much better to use than oils or creams for both ease of application and skin absorption. If you are massaging someone else and are not an expert the key is to communicate as every recipient could prefer different areas to be massaged at different strengths but saying that we have never heard of anyone saying they had a bad foot rub as they generally all feel good.

Our Avena Foot Massage balm only contains lovely natural goodness! It has NO- parabens, sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), alcohol, synthetic oils, artificial colours or preservatives, animal additives or chemical additives. Our hemp seed is not, as so many people assume, the same plant as marijuana. It is a non-narcotic variety that is amazingly versatile, nutritional and environmentally sound.

Medicinal uses for hemp plant seed extend as far back as the Ming Dynasty. It contains more naturally occurring essential fatty acids than any other plant-derived oil and a perfect 3:1 Omega-6: Omega-3 EFA ratio. The oil also contains the natural antioxidant vitamin E and sterols which block cholesterol absorption.

Hemp penetrates the skin to renourish, revive and repair cells damaged by the elements such as sun, wind and ultraviolet light. It may be used as a massage or soothing oil by applying it to the skin as desired. It may also be added to shampoo or conditioner to rejuvenate the scalp. If you choose you may add your favourite essential oil for fragrance.

This carrier oil is very high in unsaturated fatty acids, which makes it a great moisturiser for dry and devitalised skin, especially since it absorbs into the skin very quickly. It is also a cell regenerator and helps to soothe muscles.

Pure jojoba oil can be used directly on the skin to assist in fighting wrinkles and to moisturise extra dry or old skin as well as skin plagued with many other ailments or problems. It assists in minimising lines and wrinkles and can actually help to rejuvenate the skin and encourage new cell growth without clogging the skin with greasy oil. Jojoba oil will not block pores or hair follicles which remain open so they can function freely and not cause blackheads or promote acne.

It is suspected that jojoba oil tricks the skin into stopping the production of sebum by somehow mimicking it. This also means that jojoba oil will assist in breaking down sebum in clogged pores and the sebum can mix well with jojoba oil without sealing off the skin pores. Dermatologists have also reported jojoba oil as being non-irritating for use on acne, spots and blemishes.

Jojoba oil is rapidly absorbed by the skin and another remarkable property is that it is non-greasy and leaves no oily after-feel making it a wonderful skin oil or massage base. This is one of the most popular oils we sell due to its all round benefits including fighting wrinkles as well as dry, or oily skin. Jojoba oil assists in fighting lines due to dryness and keeps the skin supple and soft. It is made from a bean and the resultant jojoba oil is golden coloured, odourless, non-allergic and actually a liquid wax which can solidify easily, if that happens just place bottle in a warm place or warm water for a few moments.

The chemical content of jojoba oil is very much like that of the sperm whale oil, you could see jojoba oil as the vegetarian substitute for sperm whale oil. Simply place a few drops of pure jojoba oil in your palms, rub hands together and gently massage the oil into your clean skin or use it as carrier oil adding essential oils for fragrance. © Please do not copy text. Our lanolin is produced in China, where most of the world’s wool is processed today, from the multi-stage refining of wool grease, a natural, renewable raw material which is obtained from the scouring (washing) of raw wool. The origins of the bulk of the wool is Australia and New Zealand and it is manufactured to fully meet the requirements of the current European Pharmacopoeia and existing national requirements for pesticide residues. We tend to use wool grease from merino fine wool which provides for a good quality lanolin. Avena lanolin has been refined to a point where trace pesticide residues are practically undetectable, so you can buy with confidence. The high purity of our lanolin, without sacrificing product colour, makes it ideal for topical pharmaceutical preparations, suppositories, lip products and body creams and lotions. Lanolin can be used in the most exacting applications where colour, odour and purity are critical and is still bought today by many customers to use directly on the hands and feet especially for rough, dry and cracked skin. The intensive healing of natural lanolin assists in restoring the hands and feet to a smooth, healthy condition. © Please do not copy text. Avena product description – Lanolin (Adeps lanae).

Our Lavender Skin Cream contains a base of polysorbate 20 which has a soothing effect on your skin; cetearyl alcohol which is well known to effectively condition and soften the skin; glyceryl stearate (derived from palm kernel, vegetable or soy oil and is also found naturally in the human body) which penetrates the skin and slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface; phenoxyethanol which is used in many natural creams as a preservative as an alternative to parabens; water to moisturise your skin and a drop of enriching vitamin-e oil. The cream base is then carefully blended together with natural, fresh and pure lavender essential oil, which as well as possessing a lovely floral aroma, it is the most used oil in aromatherapy.

Lavender oil is often used to relieve hay fever, headaches and tension to name just a few. It is also used to soothe burns, prevent blistering and scarring (cooks should always keep a small bottle to hand in the kitchen) as an antiseptic used on spots, bites and stings etc. as well as being an insect repellent.

The therapeutic properties of lavender oil include antiseptic, analgesic, anti-depressant, anti-rheumatic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, bactericide, carminative, decongestant, deodorant, diuretic, sedative, and vulnerary.

This wonderful Lavender Skin Cream is ideal to use on sensitive skin and for children over 3 years of age. Usage: apply a small amount to face, hands and body twice daily and massage in.
