Aniseed essential oil was a highly prized commodity in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Greeks used the seeds for the treatment of coughs, colds and even bad dreams. The popular Turksih alcoholic drink, Raki, is made from the seeds. In Tibetan medicine a blend of aniseed and nutmeg oil was used in a lotion for anxiety, depression and other neurotic systems.

Aniseed essential oil can be used as a room freshener, to help clear tense and nervous headaches or added to the bath to ease tension and aching muscles. Use in a burner or vaporiser for asthma, colds or sinus problems, as well as for quelling nausea and vomiting.

Our infused Arnica oil is ready to apply directly to the skin or it can be used as a base oil or to make arnica creams or ointments. Arnica (Heterotheca inuloides) is a homeopathic anti-inflammatory that may be used for traumatic injuries such as sprains and strains in the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons and for backache. Arnica is probably best known as a pain relieving oil that could counteract inflammation and reduce swelling and discoloration on bruises, aiding healing and relieving pain. When blood vessels are broken, blood escapes and comes to rest in the surrounding tissue, this trapped blood is responsible for black and blue bruise marks. Arnica may reduce these marks by enabling the body to reabsorb this trapped blood. Dab onto affected areas (bruises or aching muscles) with cotton wool and massage in twice daily. Note: do not use on broken skin or internally.

Our refined avocado oil is extracted from the flesh of the avocado fruit which consists of up to 30% pure oil. Avocado still carries its nickname 'alligator pear' as the avocado tree was first found growing in the South American swamp lands. It was an important food source and was used as a medicine as well as an aphrodisiac for the Aztec civilization. Recent research in the USA has revealed that avocado oil not only smoothes the surface of the skin but can also penetrate its upper layers absorbing its vital vitamins, monounsaturated fats and EFAs below the skin to help delay degeneration keeping skin looking youthful. Avocado oil would therefore be an excellent ingredient for face creams, lotions and helping to smooth out mature and dry skin. It can also be used in after-shave balms. As the oil absorbs very quickly into the skin it would be excellent for dry and damaged skin, sun care lotions and sun creams, the sterols within the oil have also been shown to be effective as an ingredient for sun screen lotion and creams and it is considered one of the best oils for blocking harmful UV rays. Our avocado oil is light in colour and has no odour meaning it can be applied to the face as an intensive facial treatment. Avocado oil is a mild, nourishing, semi-fatty oil which is rich in vitamins and can used as an additive to other base oils at up to 20% dilution. Celery essential oil comes from the same family as carrot, parsley and fennel etc. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the seeds and is used primarily for flavouring of foods and trace amounts are also used in fine perfumes.

Celery essential oil is also a traditional remedy for a nervous stomach. Prior to the Middle Ages, a wild form of celery referred to as selinon, or smallage, was used as a diuretic and a carminative which is a treatment to reduce intestinal gas.

A study has shown that celery is also mildly tranquillizing and may be helpful in relieving arthritic pain, whilst other research suggests that celery seed contains other compounds that stop the carcinogenic effect of environmental toxins in the liver.

Can be used directly in the bath (4 - 6 drops) or in an oil burner. Therapeutic properties: anti rheumatic, antiseptic (urinary), antispasmodic, aperitif, depurative, digestive diuretic, sedative (nervous), stimulant (uterine), stomachic, tonic (digestive).

Our infused Comfrey oil is one of nature's greatest medicinal herbs and has been used since about 400 B.C. Throughout the ages comfrey has acquired an unrivalled reputation as a wonderful healing herb. Greeks and Romans used comfrey to stop heavy bleeding, treat bronchial problems, and heal wounds and broken bones. The name comfrey derives from the Latin 'conferre', meaning bring together or grow together. In Medieval times, comfrey's reputation for knitting broken bones flourished and it was commonly referred to as knitbone and often called the heal-all herb. Our infused comfrey oil takes advantage of these wonderful properties, proven over the centuries. We believe that our comfrey oil is an amazing all round healer that may help aid rapid healing for a vast array of skin injuries, broken bones and bone fractures. Comfrey's most important ingredient is the substance allantoin. Allantoin is believed to be a cell proliferator, able to strengthen skin tissue, promoting the growth and multiplication of cells and thus speeding healing. This product is said to act as a wonderful bonesetter, creating a protective casing around joints, potentially assisting healing, encouraging new skin growth and rapidly improving fractures (e.g. fingers, toes, hands, ribs). To use, apply directly to the affected area by massaging into the skin. For more serious conditions users may find it beneficial to soak a bandage or poultice in comfrey oil and to strap it the injured area. Do not use comfrey for deep cuts or lacerations. All dressings should be changed at least once per day. Comfrey oil can also be added to a wide range of aromatherapy products and makes a wonderful ointment.

Comfrey's most important ingredient is the substance allantoin. Allantoin is believed to be a cell proliferator, able to strengthen skin tissue, promoting the growth and multiplication of cells and thus speeding healing. Avena comfrey ointment can be applied directly to the skin to provide a wonderful bonesetter on fractures or healing breaks, creating a protective casing around joints and therefore it may be wonderful for arthritis and encouraging new skin growth. Apply directly to the affected area by massaging into the skin. Do not use comfrey for deep cuts or lacerations.

Who doesn’t love a good foot rub? Using our foot massage balm with essential oils is the ideal way to give the best and most soothing foot massage. The feet are very often the hardest worked part of the body. They are what hold up our weight all day long and the longer we walk, stand or work, the more tired and achy they will become. By receiving a foot massage we can experience wonderful relaxation as well as pain relief and many other health benefits. Reflexology is the art of applying pressure to specific points on a person’s feet (or hands) in order to gain a positive mental and/or physical change to the recipient. Both feet have meridians or energy lines and areas called the solar plexus reflex, which are like mini storage areas for stress and anxiety. Massaging the solar plexus reflex releases this stress, which is why a good foot massage can alleviate anxiety and bring about a deep state of relaxation even if you don’t have tired or aching feet. Foot reflexology is based on the theory that these nerve zones or reflex points run from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all vital organs on the way. This is why some of the many other benefits reflexologists advertise are such as it can help cure or prevent colds and minor ailments, increase energy, help prevent foot or ankle injuries, relieve pain from MS and chemotherapy, stimulate the activity of internal organs and treat liver dysfunction, constipation, headaches and migraines to name but a few. Foot massage can also increase circulation and lower blood pressure bringing a sense of balance and harmony to the most stressful of days. Regular foot massage could have so many healing qualities simply because the necessary zones may be rubbed and manipulated during massage (even if it is unintentionally by an amateur). Studies have been carried out on heart patients that show a significant decrease in stress after a foot massage which not only means that a foot massage causes relaxation but is better for overall health. As heart disease is so commonly linked to stress and anxiety anything that alleviates these has to be beneficial. Like most Oriental medical techniques foot massage or reflexology concentrates on treating the whole person rather than just the symptoms of one particular ailment. As well as all this, foot massage is also known to be sensual and romantic when the mood is correctly set. It is said that foot massages date back to ancient Egypt before moving to China and then Europe, meaning this age-old tradition has been around for thousands of years. These are just some of the many benefits of foot massage but at the end of the day you can always ignore all this and just have one because it feels so good! Avena Foot Massage Balm is made from a blend of cosmetic grade sweet almond and sunflower oils with pure essential oils of peppermint for soothing, cooling and freshness, tea tree for skin health and its antiseptic properties and clary sage which is renowned for bringing balance and a feeling of well-being. To use simply massage a small amount into the feet, a little goes a long way and you will get good value from each jar. Customer feedback tells us that this balm is much better to use than oils or creams for both ease of application and skin absorption. If you are massaging someone else and are not an expert the key is to communicate as every recipient could prefer different areas to be massaged at different strengths but saying that we have never heard of anyone saying they had a bad foot rub as they generally all feel good. Ingredients – sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus), bees wax (Cera alba), sweet almond oil (Prunus amygdalus dulcis), peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita), tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), clary sage essential oil (Salvea sclarea) and Tocopherol. "Dear Sir, Please can I order another two bottles of the wonderful hair stimulating oil. Both my husband and I have used it with great results. After trying a number of products we were giving up on finding anything that would work but we both find your product excellent value for money. I have enclosed a cheque for the amount we paid on our last visit but please let me know if it has gone up. Thanks again" Mrs. S Bell, Northumberland
